Check4Eat Terms of Service
Last updated: October 2026 · Effective: October 2026
Welcome to Check4Eat.
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Check4Eat mobile application, website, private application programming interfaces, databases, software, and related services (collectively, the “Service”).
By downloading, accessing, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, you must not use the Service.
Nothing in these Terms removes or limits mandatory consumer or other legal rights that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted.
1. Provider and Eligibility
The Service operates under the name Check4Eat.
- Jurisdiction: Greece
- Contact: [email protected]
The Service is intended for users aged 16 or older. By using the Service, you confirm that you satisfy the applicable minimum-age requirement and have the legal capacity required to enter into these Terms under the laws applicable to you.
2. The Service
Check4Eat provides food-product information and automated product analysis features. Depending on the available functionality, the Service may provide: barcode scanning; product searches; ingredient information; nutrition information; additive assessments; processing classifications; environmental information; product scores; dietary or allergen warnings; favorites and saved products; community-submitted product information; and other food-product information.
The Service is currently provided free of charge. We may introduce paid features, subscriptions, advertisements, or other commercial features in the future. Any paid feature will be presented with applicable pricing and terms before purchase, subject to mandatory consumer rights.
3. Informational Purposes Only
Check4Eat is an informational product-analysis service. The Service is not: a medical device; a diagnostic tool; a clinical decision-support system; a substitute for a doctor, dietitian, allergist, or other qualified professional; a food-safety authority; a regulatory certification service; or a guarantee that a food product is safe for you to consume.
Product scores, classifications, warnings, ingredient information, and other outputs are provided for general informational and educational purposes.
Allergies, intolerances, and medical conditions
If you have an allergy, celiac disease, intolerance, medically prescribed diet, or other condition where consuming an unsuitable product could cause harm, do not rely solely on Check4Eat. Product formulations, ingredient lists, allergen declarations, manufacturing processes, and packaging can change. You should always check the actual product packaging and the manufacturer's current information before consuming a product.
Check4Eat does not guarantee the absence of: allergens; traces; cross-contamination; manufacturing-line contamination; ingredient changes; regional formulation differences; or other food-safety risks.
4. Product Data Disclaimer
Product information displayed by Check4Eat may originate from: Open Food Facts; public databases; retailer or manufacturer information; community submissions; other public sources; licensed sources; and information processed or entered by Check4Eat.
Product data may be incomplete, inaccurate, outdated, region-specific, or inconsistent. A product may differ between countries, markets, package sizes, formulations, or manufacturing batches. Check4Eat does not guarantee that Product Data is complete, accurate, current, or suitable for a particular purpose.
5. Automated Product Scoring
Check4Eat may automatically calculate scores based on available product and ingredient information. These may include: Nutrition; Additive Assessment; Processing Level; Eco Component; and overall product scores.
The scoring methodology is developed by Check4Eat and may change over time. A Check4Eat score is an informational assessment generated according to our methodology. It is not an official governmental, regulatory, medical, nutritional, or food-safety certification.
The Service does not guarantee that a higher score means a product is appropriate for a particular person or health condition.
6. Dietary and Allergen Features
Check4Eat may provide user-selected dietary and allergen filtering. These settings are processed locally on your device. Examples include: Gluten-Free; Vegan; Vegetarian; Dairy-Free; Low-FODMAP; Palm Oil Free; Nuts; Soy; Milk; Eggs; Sesame; Gluten; ultra-processed-food warnings; and sugar thresholds.
These features are intended to help users identify products that may warrant further attention. They are not guarantees that a product satisfies a particular medical or dietary requirement. Always verify the actual product packaging and relevant manufacturer information.
7. Device ID and No-Account Architecture
Check4Eat does not currently require an email address, password, telephone number, or conventional user account. The application generates a pseudonymous Device ID on initial launch.
The Device ID is used to associate applicable server-side information with the same installation, including features such as scan history. The Device ID does not itself contain your name or email address.
You may reset your Device ID through the application. Resetting your Device ID disconnects the application from the previous Device ID and begins the applicable server-side deletion process described in the Privacy Policy.
Uninstalling the application by itself does not necessarily delete server-side information.
8. Community Submissions
You may voluntarily submit product photographs, barcode information, ingredient information, and other product-related material (“Community Submissions”).
Your responsibility
You represent and warrant that: you have the necessary rights to submit the material; your submission does not knowingly infringe another person's intellectual-property rights; your submission does not unlawfully disclose another person's private information; your submission is not intentionally false or malicious; and your submission does not violate applicable law.
Do not upload photographs containing faces, private documents, personal correspondence, payment information, or other sensitive personal information.
Licence to Check4Eat
You retain ownership of intellectual-property rights that you actually own in your Community Submissions. However, by submitting Community Submissions, you grant Check4Eat a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, non-exclusive licence to host, store, reproduce, copy, modify, crop, edit, adapt, translate, create derivative works from, publish, display, distribute, communicate, transmit, combine with other material, incorporate into databases, make available through the Service, use in applications and websites, use in documentation, use in marketing and promotional materials, sublicense to service providers and commercial partners, redistribute, commercialize, and otherwise use the Community Submission for purposes including operating, maintaining, improving, developing, promoting, distributing, licensing, and commercializing Check4Eat and related products, services, databases, and initiatives.
This licence may continue after you stop using Check4Eat.
Public database
Approved Community Submissions may be incorporated into the Check4Eat public product database and displayed to other users. Once a submission has been incorporated into the public database, deleting or resetting your Device ID does not necessarily cause the underlying product content or photograph to be removed.
Third-party material
You must not upload photographs or other material copied from third parties unless you have the necessary rights to grant the licence above. For example, if you download a manufacturer's copyrighted product photograph from its website, you should not upload it unless you are authorized to do so.
9. Content Review and Removal
We may review Community Submissions. We may edit, restrict, reject, or remove submissions where reasonably necessary to: maintain database quality; correct inaccurate information; protect users; address intellectual-property concerns; comply with law; prevent fraud or abuse; maintain Service integrity; or enforce these Terms.
We do not guarantee that every Community Submission will be accepted or remain available.
10. Intellectual Property
Except for third-party material and rights belonging to users or other parties, Check4Eat owns or controls the rights it has in the Service. This includes, where applicable: software; source code; application interfaces; website design; branding; logos; trademarks; original text; proprietary algorithms; scoring methodologies; databases created by Check4Eat; database structure; original content; and other proprietary elements.
Nothing in these Terms transfers ownership of Check4Eat intellectual property to you. Third-party data, including Open Food Facts data, remains subject to the rights and licences applicable to that data.
11. Open Food Facts and Other Third-Party Data
Check4Eat may use third-party food databases, including Open Food Facts. Third-party data is not represented as being owned exclusively by Check4Eat. Check4Eat may process, transform, enrich, combine, or display third-party data in accordance with the applicable licences and terms. Where required, Check4Eat will provide appropriate attribution or licensing information.
12. Private API and Backend Access
Check4Eat may operate API endpoints used by its official mobile applications and website. These endpoints are private Service infrastructure unless Check4Eat expressly designates a particular API as public.
You may not, except where expressly authorized or where mandatory law permits: access private API endpoints using an unauthorized application; scrape or bulk-download Check4Eat data; automate large-scale queries; extract or reproduce the Check4Eat database; circumvent authentication; bypass rate limits; bypass Cloudflare or other security controls; reverse engineer private API mechanisms; use unauthorized API keys or credentials; resell private API access; create a competing database using automated extraction from Check4Eat; or commercially exploit private backend access.
The fact that technical API requests can be observed by a device or browser does not grant permission to reproduce or automate those requests.
13. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use the Service to: violate applicable law; commit fraud; impersonate another person; intentionally submit false product information; distribute malicious software; attack or disrupt the Service; interfere with other users; scrape or harvest data; circumvent security controls; infringe intellectual-property rights; disclose another person's private information; upload unlawful or harmful material; abuse API infrastructure; reverse engineer the Service except where mandatory law permits it; or commercially exploit restricted parts of the Service without authorization.
14. Availability and Changes
We may modify, update, suspend, replace, or discontinue features of the Service. Product databases, scores, methodologies, interfaces, APIs, and other functionality may change over time.
We do not guarantee that the Service will: always be available; remain unchanged; be compatible with every device; contain every product; provide uninterrupted access; or retain every feature indefinitely.
Nothing in this section limits mandatory consumer rights.
15. Fees and Future Commercial Features
The Service is currently free. We may introduce: subscriptions; paid features; advertising; sponsorships; commercial API services; licensing; or other revenue-generating features.
Where a paid consumer feature is introduced, applicable pricing, payment terms, cancellation rights, and mandatory statutory rights will be presented before purchase.
16. Suspension and Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. You may uninstall the application. Uninstalling the application does not itself necessarily delete server-side information. Data deletion is governed by the Privacy Policy.
We may restrict or suspend access where reasonably necessary to: protect the Service; prevent abuse; address security threats; enforce these Terms; comply with law; or protect other users. Where required by applicable law, we will provide appropriate notice or remedies.
17. Privacy
Our collection and processing of personal data is described in the Check4Eat Privacy Policy. The Privacy Policy explains: what information we process; why we process it; retention periods; third-party infrastructure; deletion procedures; and applicable privacy rights.
Nothing in these Terms constitutes consent to processing where applicable law requires consent to be separately obtained.
18. No Warranties Beyond Those Required by Law
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Service and Product Data are provided on an “as available” basis. We do not warrant that: Product Data is always accurate; every product is included; scores are error-free; ingredient information is current; products are safe for a particular person; the Service will be uninterrupted; or the Service will satisfy every individual dietary requirement.
Nothing in these Terms excludes a warranty or consumer right that cannot lawfully be excluded.
19. Limitation of Liability
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited. This includes, where applicable, liability for: death or personal injury caused by negligence; fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; intentional misconduct where liability cannot lawfully be excluded; breach of mandatory consumer rights; and other liability that applicable law requires to remain with Check4Eat.
Subject to mandatory law, Check4Eat will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or economic losses to the extent such exclusion is legally permitted. This may include loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, business opportunities, or data where such limitation is permitted by applicable law.
Any limitation of liability contained in these Terms applies only to the maximum extent permitted under the law applicable to the particular claim.
20. Consumer Rights
If you are a consumer, mandatory consumer-protection rights applicable in your country of residence continue to apply. Nothing in these Terms is intended to deprive you of mandatory rights that cannot legally be waived.
If a provision of these Terms conflicts with a mandatory consumer-protection rule applicable to you, the mandatory rule prevails to the extent of the conflict.
21. Governing Law
To the extent permitted by applicable law, these Terms are governed by the laws of Greece. If you are a consumer residing in another jurisdiction, mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence may continue to apply.
Nothing in these Terms prevents a consumer from exercising mandatory rights or bringing proceedings before a court that has jurisdiction under applicable law.
22. Dispute Resolution
Before commencing formal proceedings, we encourage users to contact us at [email protected]. We will attempt to resolve complaints reasonably and in good faith.
Where applicable, consumers may also use an appropriate alternative dispute-resolution body available under the law of their country. The former European Online Dispute Resolution platform is no longer available; it was discontinued in 2025.
Nothing in this section restricts mandatory consumer rights concerning access to courts or legally available dispute-resolution procedures.
23. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The current version will display its “Last updated” date. For material changes, we may provide an in-app notice, website notice, or other reasonable notification. Where applicable law requires affirmative consent to a change, we will obtain that consent.
Continued use of the Service after a change does not waive mandatory statutory rights.
